Meet the Filmmaker
What is their why?
René began his career at the Austin Film Society (AFS) and earned an MFA at the American Film Institute Conservatory (AFI) in 2017. Two of his most recent brand documentaries (for companies findhelp and Papa) were finalists at the Cine Festival in San Antonio and the American Public Health Association Expo, respectively. He is a passionate storyteller and loves collaborating with other humans to bring their stories to life. René is based in Austin, TX, but frequently travels across the country to collaborate on projects.
“In Unseen Connection, Stephen, who is visually impaired, shares how Marcel, a Veteran, helps him overcome loneliness and social isolation through the power of human connection. Marcel, whose father is visually impaired, works as a Papa Pal and makes regular visits to Stephen’s home to offer support. He helps Stephen care for his beloved cat Bobo, walks with him to get mail, and makes sure he’s safe. More importantly, Marcel is a friend. The two play games, watch movies, and talk, giving Stephen the companionship he needs to be healthy and giving Marcel the purpose he needed post-deployment. Together, they’re combatting the health impacts of social isolation, one visit at a time.”
