Ted Chapin ran The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization for more than thirty years, turning a family business into, where he, as the New York Times characterized it, “drastically changed the business of exploiting copyrights by making new shoes from old leather.” On his watch, there were eight Tony Award winning revivals. He expanded the activities by encouraging new and bold productions and by taking on the representation of other authors including Irving Berlin and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Among new Broadway premieres were Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, and highly rated television productions including the multi-racial Cinderella with Whitney Houston on ABC and The Sound of Music Live! on NBC and. He produced many cast recordings as well as a complete all-star studio recording of Allegro, the most interesting flop in the Rodgers and Hammerstein line-up.

In 2003 his book Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical “Follies,”, was published by Alfred A. Knopf. The paperback edition is at Applause Books , and summer ’22 brought a revised version and an audio version narrated by Jonathan Groff.

He has been involved with many theatrical and educational institutions, starting as the co-founder of the Encores! series at New York City Center. He was the producer for two seasons at the 92nd Street Y’s Lyrics and Lyricists, and one, The Bobby Darin Story, formed the basis for Just In Time starring Jonathan Groff that opened on Broadway in April ’25 and has become one of the most successful Broadway productions of the season. He serves as Chairman of the board of The American Theater Wing and the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, and also sits on the board of New York City Center. He received an Honorary Degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
