Follow Jamaal’s example and test your patience by waiting for your next photograph. Decide on a setting or location that you’d like to document; then set yourself up, look closely, and wait, allowing yourself to come close to what Jamaal described as a meditative state, and then take only the photographs that excite you.

WHY THEY MADE THE FILM

Jamaal is a friend of mine. Through his story, I wanted to show how one can overcome tragedy and trauma through finding a passion. I also wanted to show, through the story of the birth of his daughter, how (unfortunately) history can repeat itself when it comes to family dysfunction.

Your Turn: What did YOU think of this film?

Very poignant and beautifully shot. Jamal is heroic. I hope he will remain strong. His photos are beautiful!
