Mending the Social Fabric of Our Nation: The Loneliness Epidemic among Older Adults

In an increasingly interconnected world, loneliness and social isolation have emerged as a silent epidemic, afflicting individuals of all ages and backgrounds, especially older adults. Intergenerational relationships hold the transformative power to foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and mutual understanding. Yet, our housing and built space promote age segregation. Technology, including social media, can promote social connection but also perpetuate isolation. Increasing evidence supports the efficacy of social prescribing and the benefits of intergenerational connections. What is needed for policymakers, providers, industry, and community leaders to promote social well-being on a national scale? Is the prescriptive model part of the answer?
